Preparing for Montessori preschool looks different than traditional readiness. Here are five simple, meaningful ways families can support a smooth transition.
1. Support Independence at Home
One of the greatest gifts you can give your child before starting Montessori is the chance to try things on their own.
This might include putting on shoes or jackets, washing hands independently, helping prepare snacks, or cleaning up spills with real tools. In Montessori, independence isn’t rushed or forced—it’s supported.
A helpful phrase to practice is:“I see you working hard. I’m right here if you need me.”
2. Slow Things Down
Montessori classrooms are intentionally calm, unrushed environments. You can support this transition by allowing extra time for daily routines, reducing unnecessary transitions, and letting your child finish what they’re doing before moving on.
Slowing down communicates trust and helps children feel capable and respected.
3. Normalize Mistakes (Braising Over Praising)
In Montessori, mistakes are part of the learning process.
We often talk with families about choosing braising over praising. When we braise, we cook low and slow. We get down low, observe closely, and let things simmer.
Instead of a quick “Good job,” braising sounds like:“Wow—that used to be really hard for you, but you kept at it. And now you can zipper your own jacket.”
This kind of language honors effort, persistence, and growth.
4. Focus on Practical Life Skills
Pouring, sweeping, preparing food, and caring for the environment may seem small, but these activities build coordination, concentration, and confidence.
Inviting children into real work sends a powerful message: you are trusted, and your work matters.
5. Trust the Process
Children develop at different rates. Montessori honors this by meeting each child where they are and supporting growth across social, emotional, physical, and cognitive domains.
If your child is curious, capable of separating with support, and eager to engage with their world, they are ready.
